Improved patient-specific hyperthermia planning based on parametrized electromagnetic and thermal models for the SIGMA-30 applicator

Objective To create an improved planning method for pediatric regional hyperthermia (RHT) using the SIGMA-30 applicator (SIGMA-30).Materials and Methods An electromagnetic model of was generated use with finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method. Applying special MATLAB-based algorithms, voxel models a patient pelvic rhabdomyosarcoma were created from Computed-Tomography (CT) contours FDTD (FD) capable either temperature-independent or temperature-dependent perfusion solving Bioheat Transfer Equation (BHTE). Patient parametrized regarding, first, positioning in applicator, second, absorbed power range and, third, different models, resulting so-called Parametrized Treatment Models (PTMs). A novel dedicated optimization procedure developed based on quantitative comparison numerical calculations against temperature measurements two RHT therapies.Results Using measured data, realistic estimated. Within this range, several BHTE runs performed applying aforementioned scheme, best PTMs identified each therapy via retrospective 14 sensor positions: 5 tumor, 8 rectum one bladder.Conclusion identification suitable patient-specific thermal which can be used planning, evaluated by treatment-derived SIGMA-30. The extended to other applicators types, including adults.
